Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported injured victims including one person who suffered serious injuries on Hokkaido Island.
Footage showed large cracks on several roads and one car plunged into a hole, while glass shards from windows littered the road and pavement.
Initially there were reports of a number of fires.But government spokesman Minoru Kihara said on Tuesday (9/12) that only one fire had been confirmed, namely at a house.

said the ground shook violently for about 30 seconds, accompanied by the sound of earthquake warning alarms from residents’ cellphones.
Daiki Shimohata, 33, a civil servant in Hashikami, Aomori Prefecture, told AFP that he and his family rushed out of the house.
“We have never felt the shaking before. Maybe it lasted about 20 seconds,” he said by telephone.
“We were carrying our children – a two-year-old girl and a one-year-old boy. This shaking reminded me of the disaster (of 2011),” he said.
Some 28,000 residents were asked to evacuate after the quake, according to emergency services, while media reports said some emergency shelters were full.
The earthquake occurred when Japan was facing winter with temperatures approaching freezing point.Around 2,700 homes in Aomori experienced power outages.
But by Tuesday morning, power had been restored in most areas, with fewer than 40 homes still without electricity, according to service providers.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo reported that there were around 969 Indonesian citizens living in the area of the earthquake center and its surroundings.However, the Indonesian Embassy has confirmed that so far no Indonesian citizens have become victims of the earthquake.
“The number of Indonesian citizens in Aomori is estimated to be around 969 people. Until now, Tuesday, December 9 2025, at 08.30 JST, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens becoming victims,” read a statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo.
The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has issued an appeal to Indonesian citizens in Japan to continue to monitor the situation and follow instructions given by official Japanese authorities, including studying evacuation routes;prepare an emergency bag;prepare important documents and sufficient cash, and contact the Indonesian Embassy’s hotline if you need help.
Shinkansen bullet train services were stopped in several areas while technicians checked for possible damage to the tracks.
No abnormalities were found at the Higashidori nuclear power plant in Aomori or the Onagawa facility in Miyagi Prefecture, operator Tohoku Electric Power said.
PM Takaichi on Tuesday morning appealed to residents to remain alert.
“Please listen to information from the JMA or local government over the next week or so, check that household furniture is securely installed… and be prepared to evacuate when you feel shaking,” he said.
