“My statement regarding a situation that threatens survival does not change the position held by the previous government,” Takaichi added.
He also said Japan would explain its position to China and the international community through diplomatic channels.
Tensions between China and Japan have worsened since November 7, when Takaichi said China’s attack on Taiwan was considered a “survival-threatening situation.”
The statement could potentially pave the way for Japan to exercise its right to collective self-defense.
However, Beijing strongly condemned the remarks and took countermeasures, including urging Chinese tourists to avoid Japan and halting seafood imports.
Meanwhile, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Defense via the US company’s social media, X, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi made a telephone call with British Defense Minister John Healey.
In the call, Koizumi “describes China’s radar exposure of SDF aircraft on December 6.”
The two sides “share the determination to meet challenges in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific and push forward a new era of defense cooperation,” the statement said.
Tokyo on Sunday (7/12) said a Chinese J-15 fighter jet launched from the aircraft carrier Liaoning locked the radar of two Japanese F-15 jets over international waters southeast of Okinawa’s main island.
However, China said the maneuvers were professional, safe, controlled and not debatable.
He also added that activating radar is “common practice” for carrier-based aircraft during exercises.
Separately, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun on Wednesday (17/12) said Japan should reflect on its own actions instead of seeking international support for its position.
He was responding to questions from Japanese national security adviser Ichikawa Keiichi in talks with British, French, German and Canadian officials.
“What the Japanese side should do is listen to those calls and introspect, instead of trying to influence other countries to believe their baseless explanations,” Guo said.
“We urge parties in Japan to stop spreading false narratives, face history, correct mistakes, retract false statements, fulfill commitments, and take responsibility for answers acceptable to China and the international community,” he added.
