Last week Takaichi also became a public topic of conversation for arranging a meeting with staff at 3am in his office, to prepare for the parliamentary session.
Before a legislative committee, Takaichi was asked to explain his government’s discussions about the possibility of expanding the upper limit on overtime work, supposedly to encourage economic growth.
Takaichi “defended” the discussion by saying that workers and employers have different needs. He said some people choose to work two jobs to make ends meet, while companies impose strict limits on overtime regulations.
He emphasized that any changes in his administration have the goal of ensuring workers’ health is protected.
“Indeed, if we could create a situation where people could balance childcare and childcare responsibilities as they see fit, and also be able to work, enjoy free time and relax, that would be ideal,” he said.
Japan has long been working on rules to ensure a healthy work-life balance, as many workers face intense pressure in the office. There is even the word “karoshi”, a term for people who die from overwork.
Takaichi came to power as Japan’s first female prime minister. After being elected, he promised to put aside “work and personal life balance” for himself.
“I will work, work, work, work and work,” said Takaichi after being inaugurated.
