A senior Japanese government spokesman, Maki Kobayashi, has also responded to Fu Cong’s letter. He stressed that China’s claim that Takaichi had changed Japan’s position on the Taiwan crisis was “completely baseless.”
“I am aware of this letter. The claim that our country has changed its position is completely baseless,” said Kobayashi on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Saturday, as quoted
The Japan Times.
Kobayashi said that Japan had repeatedly explained to China the essence of Takaichi’s statement and Japan’s consistent position regarding the Taiwan issue. He also stated that Tokyo was ready to dialogue with Beijing to resolve this problem.
Japan’s comments were made in response to a letter of complaint from Chinese Ambassador to the UN Fu Cong to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Friday (21/11).
Fu Cong in his letter stated that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had committed a serious violation of international law and diplomatic norms because of his statement that Tokyo could respond militarily to a Chinese attack on Taiwan.
“If Japan dares to attempt military intervention in a cross-Strait situation, this would be an act of aggression,” wrote Fu Cong.
“China will resolutely exercise its right to self-defense based on the UN Charter and international law and firmly defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.
China and Japan recently became involved in an argument over Takaichi’s statement regarding Taiwan on November 7.At that time, the PM told parliament that Japan could deploy its Self-Defense Forces if China launched an attack on Taiwan.
China was furious because it felt that Japan had provoked and crossed the line.Beijing asked Takaichi to withdraw these remarks, but Takaichi refused.
China finally banned its citizens from traveling to Japan and stopped marine products and anime broadcasts.
Meanwhile, Takaichi stated that he would refrain from talking about future troop deployment scenarios.
China has always viewed Taiwan as part of its territory.Meanwhile, Taiwan, which already has its own government, wants independence from Beijing.
China has always considered the Taiwan issue as a non-negotiable red line.Beijing intends to reunite Taiwan with military force if necessary.
