Beijing was furious and asked Takaichi to withdraw his words. However, the Japanese PM was reluctant. The conflict became increasingly heated and protracted.
Most recently, Japan plans to deploy missiles to Yonaguni Island, near Taiwan.China said the plan would trigger military operations and endanger the region.
Will the Japan-China conflict have an impact on Indonesia?
Founder of the think tank Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) and former deputy foreign minister, Dino Patti Djalal, said the world is better without any conflict or clashes.
“We really don’t need it right now. And will it affect Indonesia? Of course. You know why? If there is a clash in the Taiwan Strait, there will be a blockade,” said Dino during a press conference ahead of the Conference on Indonesian Foreign Policy (CIFP) in South Jakarta, Tuesday (25/11).
The Taiwan Strait is an important maritime route, and separates Taiwan Island from China. This strait also connects the South China Sea and the East China Sea or Sea of Japan.
Not only that, the Taiwan Strait is also an important route for navigation and a focal point for geopolitical tensions, especially for China and Taiwan.
Furthermore, Dino suspects that if a conflict really breaks out there will likely be a military operation involving the Navy and Air Force. This certainly hinders shipping lanes, commercial fleets.
“And what will be the consequences? It will paralyze trade activities, not only in that part of the world, but also in our part of the world,” said Dino.
He then said, “And we hope that tensions in the Taiwan Strait can be avoided.
Dino also emphasized that Indonesia’s current position adheres to the One Policy policy, a principle adhered to by all ASEAN members.
One Policy is a policy that recognizes one China including Taiwan.China has indeed asked countries with which they have diplomatic relations to implement the One China Policy principle.
“And we hope that this position will be very important to maintain that position,” added Dino.
Indonesia has good relations with China and Taiwan.
