However, Forbes notes that James Cameron is the only filmmaker who earned most of his billionaire status through film earnings, which collectively earned nearly US$9 billion at the global box office.
Cameron is also the only director to have three films with earnings of more than $2 billion worldwide, namely Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009), and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).

Avatar still holds the title of highest grossing film in history with revenues of US$2.9 billion worldwide;The Way of Water is in third place as the highest grossing film with revenues of US$2.3 billion.
Meanwhile, Titanic is in fourth place with revenues of US$2.25 billion.
The director’s financial status is expected to further improve with Avatar: Fire and Ash.Forbes projects Avatar 3 to make him at least US$200 million personally.
