James Cameron apparently almost became a director
Wicked
, before the film finally fell into the hands of John M Chu as his fans have witnessed in the last two years.
Cameron admitted this in an episode of the podcast The Town With Matthew Belloni which aired on November 24 2025 and discussed the novel Wicked (1995) by Gregory Maguire.

“I really liked the story,” Cameron said of the novel which was then made into a Broadway show in 2003. “I mean, The Wizard of Oz [1939] is one of my favorite [films].”

On Wednesday (26/11), Cameron revealed that he had discussed with Universal Pictures about the possibility of directing the film after continuing the Avatar project in 2009.
He admitted he was interested because he understood the film would be a big event and fit the budget and scale of the projects he usually handles.
However, unfortunately James Cameron felt that something was not suitable for his conditions at that time, namely the essence of this film which was based on a musical.Even so, Cameron did not rule out the possibility of working on a musical film one day.
“I can’t find the song,” Cameron said.
Wicked For Good itself is the second part of the Wicked story, the first part of which will air in 2024. This time, the story will focus on the fate of Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship after they chose different paths.
Apart from that, Wicked For Good will also highlight Elphaba’s efforts in defending the rights of animals who were forced by the rulers of the Land of Oz to become slaves for development.
Just like before, the vocal acts performed by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in this film were carried out directly on location at the insistence of the two actresses.
This film is still being directed by Jon M. Chu with a script written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox.The script is an adaptation of the second act of the stage musical Wicked (2003) by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman.
