, one demonstrator even wore a Netanyahu mask and orange prison jumpsuit to highlight his ongoing corruption trial.
The demonstration was held with the slogan “Pardon = Banana Republic”, with participants standing behind a large pile of bananas on top of which there was a sign that read “Forgiveness” as a satirical reference to the request for leniency.
The protest comes amid strong political and public backlash against Netanyahu’s move to ask President Herzog to end the years-long trial.
Earlier, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid urged Herzog not to grant pardon unless Netanyahu admits his guilt and retires from political life.
Netanyahu formally asked for leniency on Sunday without admitting guilt, although Israeli law requires an admission of guilt before the President can issue a pardon.
