“Forgiveness is given to offenders. That is what the law stipulates,” Fettman was quoted as saying

On Sunday, Netanyahu officially asked Herzog to pardon him in the corruption case against him.Netanyahu was indicted on one count of bribery and three counts of fraud and breach of trust in three separate cases.
The indictment relates to allegations of press manipulation as well as the receipt of illegal gifts by Netanyahu and his wife, in exchange for government assistance.
Netanyahu’s first trial began in May 2022 and is still ongoing.Netanyahu continues to deny the accusations against him and maintains that they are fabricated.
Netanyahu’s letter requesting forgiveness was not responded well by a number of people.Demonstrators rallied outside Herzog’s residence to urge the president to reject Netanyahu’s appeal.
Herzog meanwhile said he was reviewing Netanyahu’s pardon request. He also denied reports that he was willing to grant the request on the condition that Netanyahu admit his mistake and leave politics.
Netanyahu’s pardon request consists of 111 pages. In the letter, Netanyahu did not admit wrongdoing or express regret.
According to Fettman, an Israeli president can only pardon if the party involved in the case admits their mistake. It is “impossible” for the attorney general or prosecutor to recommend that the president pardon someone without an admission of guilt.
“If Netanyahu frames his pardon request as something ‘for the good of the country,’ then the president may conclude that Netanyahu must accept conditions to achieve that, including the possibility of withdrawing from political life,” Fettman said.
Fettman quit Netanyahu’s defense team after the court rejected Netanyahu’s request for a NIS10 million award to cover legal costs.
Netanyahu is the only prime minister in Israel’s history to be tried while in office. He was indicted on charges of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in three separate cases. He has not been convicted of any charges.
Netanyahu has steadfastly rejected the accusations and condemned the cases as a “witch hunt” staged by the media, police and judiciary.
