The burning of the Koran and the destruction of the Hajja Hamida Mosque in Deir Istiya, West Bank,
Palestine
by Israeli settlers occurred in the early hours of Thursday (13/11).
According to the Mayor of Deir Istiya, the settlers launched their action before the morning prayers were held.

The settlers burned three copies of the Koran and the flames spread to the carpet and walls of the mosque.
The Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs said the settlers attacked the mosque in what it called a “vicious crime and a direct attack on the feelings of Muslims.”
“Many houses and cars were not attacked, but the attacks were on religious symbols to provoke Muslims with sentences that offended the Prophet Muhammad,” said Abdul Rahim Zidan in an interview on Palestinian TV, as quoted

The walls on the outside of the mosque read in Hebrew, namely “Muhammad is a pig,” referring to the Islamic prophet, and “Not afraid of Avi Bluth.”
Bluth is the commander of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the West Bank, who condemned the settler attacks and described the perpetrators as “anarchist fringe youth.”
Meanwhile, several parts of the mosque’s interior were damaged by fire, there were piles of charred rubble strewn on the ground.
The walls of the mosque are now black from smoke and heat, while the window glass is broken.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry assessed the attack, saying it “holds Israel directly and responsibly for this crime and its consequences.”
But in a statement to

, the IDF acknowledged the attack, sending troops to the location to “review the incident and carry out scanning”.
They also gave the case to the Israeli Police for further processing.The IDF also said there were “no known suspects.”
Some 700,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, areas the Palestinians want for their future state.
Israeli settlements in the occupied territories are considered illegal under international law.
