The execution was carried out after Iran’s Supreme Court (MA) upheld his death sentence on charges of ‘large-scale disruption of the country’s economic system’ and network fraud.
A court spokesman said the scams caused ‘severe financial and psychological harm’ to victims, including stress-related illnesses and family breakdown.
For your information, Iran applies the death penalty not only for criminal offenses or crimes such as murder and rape. The death penalty is also given by the country’s court system in major economic and espionage cases.
Amnesty International lists Iran as the country with the second highest number of death sentences in the world after China.
The case that dragged Ghaffari started when the company he founded in North Qazvin Province in 2013 promised a car purchase scheme below market price. Then it developed into a property and investment program.
Prosecutors accused Ghaffari and his associates of taking ‘large amounts of funds from the public’, and using new savings to pay interest to initial clients.
The case attracted more than 28,000 plaintiffs and involved 28 defendants.
The judge said the scheme involved funds equivalent to about US$350 million (around IDR 5.8 trillion) at current exchange rates.
Then only around ‘four percent’ of customers actually received the vehicle. The court also confirmed that Ghaffari was guilty of damaging the national economy.
A court spokesman said the court had worked to ensure victims received compensation.
Ghaffari during the trial stated several times that he was ready to pay compensation to each customer, which would spare him from the death penalty.
However, despite being given ‘several warnings and deadlines’ after the Supreme Court upheld the sentence in August, he failed to fulfill his obligations.
