Deputy Minister
Investment
and Downstream/Deputy Head of BKPM
Todotua Pasaribu
told the story when he was invited by the Main Director
Toyota
Motor Manufacturing Indonesia Nandi Julyanto met with the Japanese Toyota group to see how biodiesel technology is produced.
Initially, Todotua said the government had issued a policy of 40 percent biodiesel (B40) in diesel and 10 percent bioethanol (E10) in gasoline.
“And in 2027 we will have it
mandatory
to enter the E10 program. When we entered the E10 program, consolidated sales or national consumption of our gasoline was approximately 40 million.”If we enter E10, then we need around 4 million ethanol,” said Todotua at the Antara Business Forum 2025 at The Westin, South Jakarta, Wednesday (19/11).

Then, he said that biodiesel technology in Japan had entered its second generation.
“Last week I was with Mr. Nandi,
surprise
Well, we were taken to Japan and met the Toyota group. And the technology they have entered
second generation,
Sir,” said Todotua.
Todotua explained that technology in Japan uses dregs
sugarcane bagasse
, sorghum, to rice stalks.
“Even there they are, rice stalks, dregs. They can be ethanol products,” he explained.
Furthermore, he said the reason for visiting the Toyota group was because methanol would be mixed into gasoline as the majority of cars currently made in Japan.
“Why Toyota? Because this methanol will later be used for
blending
regarding petrol/gasoline and the motor vehicle population, especially cars, perhaps 60-70 percent are still Japanese (made in Japan).
So they are the market, they are the consumers,
” said Todotua.
