A number of sports leaders in Vietnam see a gap in bonus money between Vietnam and other countries.Vietnam’s sports leaders believe that a significant increase in bonuses is needed to reassure athletes and encourage them to dedicate themselves to sports.
“The prize money in Indonesia is more than 1 billion rupiah, equivalent to around 1.5 billion Vietnamese dong, for the SEA Games gold medal. If they win 80 gold medals, the total prize money will be around 120 billion Dong. This figure may not be large compared to other economic sectors, but for sports, this is a huge source of motivation,” said a representative of the Vietnamese sports delegation as quoted by Bongda24h.

Meanwhile, the amount of prizes or bonuses set by the Vietnamese government for athletes who win SEA Games gold medals is still relatively low at around 45 million VND (Rp. 28 million).
Recognizing the shortcomings of these bonuses, a number of sports leaders in Vietnam are actively providing suggestions regarding policy revisions to increase bonus money, improve nutrition, and offer other benefits to athletes.
Meanwhile, the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports acknowledged that many professional athletes choose to pursue a career in amateur competitions due to a lack of awards at the professional level.
“There must be a very clear incentive policy, and the level of rewards for athletes in major sports must be increased. Only then will they not leave to seek additional income elsewhere,” said a representative of Vietnam’s Department of Physical Education and Sports as quoted by Bongda24h.
Apart from monetary bonuses, athletes’ career prospects after retirement are also emphasized as a key factor in retaining talent.
“Clear agreements, contracts and commitments are necessary. When athletes stop competing and retire, they must be guaranteed a job. Only then can athletes and their families look to the future and feel safe about continuing their careers,” said a representative from the Department of Sports and Physical Education.
“If Vietnamese athletes are given a prize of 500 million VND for a SEA Games gold medal, I believe it will be a huge motivation. Then, the athletes will no longer play pickleball; they will focus on practicing tennis or their strongest sport,” he added.
