He gave an example, one of which is the Thai film industry which is closely related to genre
Boys Love
or
Bromance
which is the hallmark of their films.
Chun said that like Thailand, Indonesia must also have a trademark or characteristic for their films.
He also thinks that perhaps a horror genre film from Indonesia could penetrate the South Korean market and become its trademark.
“In Thailand there are lots of films or dramas of this genre
boys love
“That could be a characteristic of Thailand, maybe if Indonesia has a characteristic then it could be the horror genre,” he said.
At the same time, CGV Indonesia’s Chief Marketing Officer, Ssun Kim, admitted that Indonesia produces a lot of horror genre films.
According to him, the people of Indonesia and South Korea are both interested in horror genre films.
Ssun Kim gave an example of the success of the film Exhuma (2024), which attracted the interest of Indonesian audiences by reaching 2.6 million viewers.
This horror film tells the story of a group of spiritual experts who want to move the ancestral graves of a rich family.
Ssun Kim believes that one of the factors causing Exhuma’s success in Indonesia is Indonesian culture which is also reflected in the film.
He also said that Indonesian people like horror films and legendary stories, which Exhuma might consider to contain these elements.
In the film, Exhuma displays a number of cultural elements that are close to Indonesian culture. One of them, the film shows a body being buried in the ground.
Even so, Ssun Kim also provided a number of notes so that Indonesian films could continue to be better in the future.
First, Indonesian films must continue to improve the quality of computer graphics (CG) in the future.
Then, reflecting on Korea, Ssun Kim touched on the film’s production methods, especially Business to-Consumer (B2C) marketing.
Finally, he also touched on the challenges for Indonesian films to go global, namely the Indonesian language which is not very commonly known not only in Korea, but in the world.
“Using the right subtitles. So that will be another key marketing point,” said Ssun Kim.
