Indonesian Citizens Killed in Hong Kong Apartment Fire Increases to 9 People

The number of Indonesian citizens (WNI) who died in a large fire at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex, Tai Po,
Hong Kong
increasing again.
Based on updated data from the Hong Kong Police Force as of Sunday (30/11) at 12.20 HKT, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recorded that two additional Indonesian citizens had died and one Indonesian citizen was injured.
“The total number of Indonesian citizens who died has been confirmed to be 9 people and the number of injured victims is 3 people,” said the official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Previously, the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong also reported that all Indonesian citizens who died were women and Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) in the domestic sector.Meanwhile, another Indonesian citizen is still undergoing treatment in stable condition.
The Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong has sent teams to a number of affected locations to assist with the identification process, data consolidation and distribution of emergency aid for Indonesian citizens.Emergency posts have also been opened at the Indonesian Consulate General and Tai Po Community Building to facilitate information retrieval and assistance for PMI living in the area.
“Also establishing communication with community nodes to gather information on the whereabouts and condition of Indonesian citizens/PMI who may be affected,” wrote the Indonesian Consulate General in his statement.
Until now, verification of 79 Indonesian citizens/PMI is still ongoing, while the whereabouts and condition of 61 others have been confirmed, including the victims who died.
A major fire hit seven of the eight apartment buildings in the Wang Fuk Court complex, Tai Po, on Wednesday (26/11) afternoon until evening local time.This incident is said to be one of the largest fires in Hong Kong in recent decades, killing 128 people and injuring dozens more.
Around 140 Indonesian citizens, all domestic migrant workers, are recorded as living and working in the complex.The fire allegedly spread quickly due to construction netting covering the building, which police said was not supposed to be flammable.
The Hong Kong government has detained 11 people who have been named as suspects on suspicion of murder related to this fire.A total of around 4,000 residents live in the complex which consists of around 2,000 apartment units, many of whom are elderly.
Previous data from Hong Kong authorities stated that the number of Indonesian citizens who died was seven before the latest update from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
