, will launch a new airline
Air Borneo
in January 2026, which connects Sarawak with a number of cities on Kalimantan Island, including opening a direct route to the capital of the archipelago (
IKN
).
Sarawak Transport Minister YB Dato Sri Lee Kim Shi visited the Otorita IKN (OIKN) office on Wednesday (10/12).This meeting is a strategic momentum to explore the potential for cross-sector cooperation and investment, from transportation, education, health, to culture.
“We are on the same island in Borneo. We are very interested in the development of the archipelago, this is the future. Fellow people in Borneo, we are proud that in the future the whole world will come to the archipelago,” said Dato Sri Lee Kim Shi in a written statement, Thursday (11/12).

IKN Authority Secretary Bimo Adi Nursanthyasto positively welcomed the plan for direct flights from Sarawak to IKN.Moreover, Nusantara Airport will soon operate as a commercial airport.
“This will make mobility to and from IKN easier. Not only by air, if the railway line across three countries is realized, this will move the Southeast Asian economy and show the world the strength of the region’s economic dynamics,” said Bimo.
Apart from transportation, the two parties also discussed collaboration opportunities in the health sector.Sarawak, which has superior health facilities, opens up the possibility of collaborating with hospitals in IKN, including on aspects of medical research that can mutually strengthen service capacity.
In the cultural sector, Sarawak and IKN, which have the same cultural roots, see opportunities for developing joint cultural programs and events in the future, including the potential for holding chopstick competitions and other cultural exchanges.
