CEO of IESR Fabby Tumiwa said ethanol production does not have to depend on sugar cane, but can use various types of biomass that are available in many regions.
“I’m confident because ethanol can be produced from other biomass. If in Brazil it is sugar cane, in Indonesia there are many others that don’t have to interfere with food,” said Fabby at the hitclubapk3 Indonesia Sustainability Summit 2025 forum at Menara Bank Mega, South Jakarta, Wednesday (26/11).

According to him, one option that could be developed is bamboo. This plant grows quickly, can be planted on various community land, and does not require clearing new forests.
“I remember that one type of plant that can be processed into ethanol, and can grow in Indonesia, is bamboo,” said Fabby.
He explained that bamboo is quite adaptable and widely available. Therefore, he believes that this approach can be a way to strengthen energy security without causing land conflicts or increasing emissions.
“Planting bamboo, on land owned by the community. It does need planning, it will need to be there later
off taker,
a supply chain must be created.”But the technology already exists, the solution is there,” he said.
He also reminded the importance of avoiding bioenergy production practices that risk triggering deforestation or disturbing indigenous communities.
“We don’t have to clear forests, we don’t have to disturb forests so that forest emissions don’t increase again,” said Fabby.
