“Based on the results of coordination with the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF), to date, a total of 7 (seven) Indonesian citizens (WNI) have died,” said the statement from the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong, Saturday (29/11).
The Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong said that all the Indonesian citizens who died were women and Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) in the domestic sector.One Indonesian citizen is still receiving treatment in hospital in stable condition and awaiting recovery.
As of Friday (28/11) at 23.59 local time, Hong Kong police recorded the number of victims who died as a result of the fire in Tai Po at 128 people.Meanwhile, the number of injured reached 79 people.All of them are under treatment spread across 15 hospitals.
From the results of consolidated employment data and field verification by the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong, it was recorded that there were around 140 Indonesian citizens/PMI in the domestic sector working in the Wang Fuk Court area.
Of this number, the whereabouts and condition of 61 people were confirmed, including the Indonesian citizens/PMI who died.
Meanwhile, the whereabouts and condition of 79 other Indonesian citizens/PMI are still being verified.
The Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong continues to provide assistance to affected Indonesian citizens/PMIs, including by coordinating with the Hong Kong government regarding access to information, providing assistance in accordance with safety protocols and local regulations, opening emergency posts in the Indonesian Consulate General and Tai Po Community buildings, as well as establishing communication with community nodes to seek information regarding the whereabouts and conditions of Indonesian citizens/PMIs who may be affected.
Fire broke out in seven apartment blocks in the Wang Fuk Court residential area, Tai Po, Hong Kong, on Wednesday (26/11) afternoon.
Police stated that when the incident occurred, the apartment complex was covered by netting.The net is used to keep construction materials from falling from the scaffolding.The apartment building was currently under construction.
Police suspect that this net was the cause of the fire spreading quickly.This is known from the videos of the fire circulating.
The mesh material in the construction should not be flammable.Contractors in Hong Kong must have a certificate to ensure this.
So far, the Hong Kong government has detained and named 11 people as suspects for alleged murder.
