In his written statement, Kore-eda revealed the first moment he learned about the Look-Back manga and became interested in being directly involved in adapting the story for the big screen.
“On my way back from Kyoto to Tokyo, I was attracted to the back of a figure on the cover of a book in a bookstore at Shinagawa Station,” said Kore-eda.
“Without thinking, I immediately picked up the book and that was my first encounter with Look Back. That night, I read it in one sitting.”
“Even though manga and film are different genres, as a fellow creator, I feel the strong determination behind this work. I can painfully feel that Mr. Fujimoto cannot move forward without creating this work.”
