According to IQAir, levels of the pollutant PM2.5, cancer-causing microparticles, which are small enough to enter the bloodstream via the lungs, are much higher than the daily exposure limits recommended by the World Health Organization.
“I’ve had difficulty breathing on the streets recently,” said resident Dang Thuy.
“The authorities are only active on paper. Nothing has worked yet and highly toxic air still exists in our city,” added Thuy.
Due to severe air pollution, the Hanoi government has appealed to the public to limit their time outdoors. The local government also said it would temporarily close face-to-face schools if the situation worsens.
The government also instructed officials to crack down on illegal burning of waste and take steps to control the spread of dust at construction sites.
Experts say pollution in Hanoi is the result of widespread construction activity, as well as emissions from the large number of motorbikes and cars that pass by every day.
Additionally emissions from new coal-fired power plants in the north and burning of agricultural land also exacerbate the pollution problem in Hanoi.
Recently the authorities are also said to have announced plans to ban gas-powered motorbikes from Hanoi during certain hours, starting July 2026.
