Even so, Hamas rejects disarmament because for them surrendering weapons is the same as “taking away one’s soul”.
On that occasion, Meshaal also spoke about Hamas’ position regarding United States President Donald Trump’s peace proposals, one of which includes the establishment of a post-war Gaza authority. He stressed that Hamas would never accept a non-Palestinian government in Gaza.
Meshaal’s remarks referred to a “Peace Council” of which Trump would be chairman and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair would be a member.
However, a number of media reported on Tuesday (9/12) that Blair’s nomination to the Peace Council had been rejected following opposition from a number of Arab-Muslim countries.
Blair’s reputation was tarnished by his role in the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and his failure to act as the Quartet’s envoy to the Middle East.
Furthermore, Meshaal also expressed views regarding global concerns that the Hamas-Israel ceasefire agreement has the potential to weaken considering that phase two has not yet taken place.
According to him, increasing the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza is very important so that the second phase can begin.
“We told the mediators that Gaza needs people who can help them get back on their feet and recover,” he said.
The Hamas-Israel ceasefire agreed in October through US mediation has largely remained in place, despite frequent violations by Israel.
However, Arab-Muslim countries at the Doha Forum last week voiced concerns that this agreement would be weakened due to the massive violations that have occurred.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani told the forum that the Gaza ceasefire was at a “critical moment”.The foreign ministers of Türkiye and Egypt also urged influential countries to redouble efforts to keep the deal in place.
Currently, all Hamas prisoners, both living and dead, have been returned to Israel.Hundreds of Israeli prisoners have also been released from Zionist prisons and returned to Gaza.
Under the agreement for phase one of the ceasefire, Israel must also increase humanitarian aid coming into Gaza. However, what is happening now is that the volume of aid is still far below the agreed amount.
