Great Japanese Earthquake, 40 Cm Tsunami Hits Misawa Beach to Hokkaido

big earthquake
magnitude 7.6 on Monday (8/12) local time.

, local Japanese media reported that there were victims injured by the large earthquake.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a 7.6 magnitude earthquake occurred off Misawa Beach, Japan’s east coast, at a depth of 53 kilometers.

A tsunami warning was issued with the first wave hitting a harbor in the northern region of Aomori, at 11.43 local time.
Another wave reached the city of Urakawa in the Hokkaido region, at 23.50 local time.Both waves measured 40 centimeters (16 inches), according to the JMA report.

quoted a hotel employee in the city of Hachinohe, Aomori as saying there were several injuries, with live footage showing broken glass strewn across the street.
The quake was also felt in north central Sapporo, where alarms sounded on smartphones to alert residents.

in Hokkaido described shaking for about 30 seconds which made him unable to stand straight.
The Japan Meteorological Agency earlier warned a tsunami as high as three meters was expected to hit Japan’s eastern coastline following a major earthquake.
Japan sits atop four major tectonic plates along the western edge of the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and is one of the most tectonically active countries in the world.
The archipelago, home to around 125 million people, experiences around 1,500 shocks every year.
Most shocks are mild, although the damage they cause varies according to location and depth below the earth’s surface.
