Government Prepares Regulations for Wood Utilization After Sumatran Floods

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said that the regulations were contained in a circular issued by the Ministry of Forestry to all Provincial Governments and Regency/City Governments.
“The Ministry of Forestry has issued a circular addressed to all provincial governments and district/city governments regarding the utilization of wood if it is to be used for rehabilitation or reconstruction purposes,” said Pras at Halim Perdana Kusuma Air Base, Jakarta, Friday (19/12).

Pras said that the regulation also regulates the use of wood for the purposes of making temporary and permanent shelter for victims.
He also said that the regulations were drafted to ensure that the use of natural resources was orderly, coordinated and in accordance with the rules.
Pras said that the regulation had also been socialized to local governments at all levels so that implementation would run in harmony in the field.
He also emphasized that the use of wood by the community is possible.However, it must still be coordinated with local regional governments according to their respective authorities.
“So if people want to use it, of course it will be coordinated with the relevant government at every level,” he said.
Flash floods and landslides hit a number of areas on Sumatra Island.This disaster affected 52 districts/cities in three provinces.
Now, the government is preparing 44,045 temporary housing units, aka shelters, for victims of flash floods and landslides on Sumatra Island.
Quoting a press statement from the Presidential Secretariat, the shelter will be prepared by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
All temporary housing units are spread across three provinces affected by the disaster, namely Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra.
In detail, in West Sumatra there were 2,559 units, North Sumatra 5,158 units, and the most in Aceh reached 36,328 units.
