used for emergency needs to speed up recovery in the three affected provinces, with several mechanisms that must be fulfilled.
Director General of Sustainable Forest Management (PHL) of the Ministry of Forestry, Laksmi Wijayanti, stated that driftwood material that has accumulated at disaster locations can be used for emergency needs to speed up recovery while maintaining legal aspects and preventing misuse in the field.
“That the use of driftwood for emergency disaster management, post-disaster rehabilitation and recovery, as well as material assistance for affected communities for the construction of facilities and infrastructure, can be carried out on the basis of the principles of people’s safety and humanity,” he said, quoting

However, he reminded that this use was not carried out without regulations.Wood carried by flood currents has clear legal status.
According to him, driftwood carried by floods can be categorized as found wood whose handling mechanism is guided by Law No. 18 of 2013 concerning Prevention and Eradication of Forest Destruction, so that implementation is still needed that upholds the principles of traceability and traceability.
Thus, every use of driftwood must follow reporting and recording procedures so as not to open gaps for illegal logging practices or wood laundering by taking advantage of the momentum of a disaster.
The Ministry of Forestry ensures that the distribution of driftwood for the benefit of the community is not carried out unilaterally.Laksmi said that the process must be cross-institutional.
“The distribution of the use of driftwood for post-disaster handling and recovery is carried out jointly in an integrated manner between the Ministry of Forestry and related agencies in the provincial government, district/city governments and various elements of law enforcement,” he explained.
A joint approach is an important step, especially to avoid overlapping authorities and ensure that wood actually reaches the communities that need it.
Apart from regulating the use of driftwood, the government has also adopted policies to prevent illegal practices in the midst of emergency situations.
“Activities for utilizing and transporting logs originating from forest utilization locations in the three provinces have been temporarily suspended until further regulations are met,” said Laksmi.
This temporary suspension is intended to avoid the potential for illegal logging disguised as driftwood, clarify the source of the wood material in circulation and ensure that the focus of officials and the community is on disaster management.
In the context of recovery, this wood is an asset that can speed up reconstruction, as well as a practical solution amidst limited logistical access to affected areas.
