This policy is said to be a concrete result of the meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, last October. At that time, the two leaders agreed on the need to strengthen strategic partnerships and facilitate the travel of their respective countries.
“President Ramaphosa’s visit a few weeks ago to Indonesia reflects the close cooperation between the two countries. The two Presidents agreed to visa-free entry, so I think this is good news for all of you, no more visas,” said Gibran in his speech in English, citing Antara.
This statement was greeted with applause from South African businessmen present at the forum. The visa-free scheme is considered to facilitate business collaboration and encourage interaction between communities so that economic cooperation runs more quickly.
Previously, President Prabowo in a joint press statement with Ramaphosa emphasized his desire to speed up the implementation of the entire cooperation agreement by sending a technical team to discuss concrete programs between the two countries.
“We also hope to establish closer cooperation in the field of inter-community arrangements, for example joint visa-free arrangements,” Prabowo said at the time.
In the same forum, Gibran also emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to expanding foreign investment in South Africa, especially in the agricultural and energy sectors. He considers South Africa to be a strategic partner as well as an entry point for Indonesia to reach the African market more widely.
According to him, Indonesia has industrial capacity, human resources, manufacturing networks, technology, and access to the ASEAN market which can be utilized in long-term cooperation. On this occasion, he also appreciated the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the strategic industrial sector.
In closing, Gibran expressed optimism about Africa’s future, which was considered full of potential.
“We are open to helping all of you because Africa is a continent that will determine the future. Africa is developing very rapidly and is full of potential. Africa is the future and Indonesia wants to build that future together with Africa,” he said.
