welcomed the arrival of the Poseidon P-8A maritime patrol aircraft from
United States
at Berlin airport last week.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius welcomed the naval jet.The aircraft is designed to detect and combat Russian submarines in the North Atlantic.

German Naval Inspector Jan Christian Kaack meanwhile described the P-8A as a sentry.
“The P-8A will continuously strengthen our capabilities in maritime reconnaissance, global maritime surveillance, and especially in detecting and combating enemy submarines,” said Kaack on Friday (7/11), quoted

Germany intended to deploy the aircraft primarily in the gap between Greenland, Iceland and Great Britain.This is NATO’s main supply route and where Russian submarines could disrupt supply lines during a conflict.
Russian submarines could also attack from the Baltic Sea via St. Petersburg.Petersburg or from the Mediterranean via the Strait of Gibraltar.
To anticipate a Russian attack, Germany and Britain signed the Trinity House Agreement in 2024. The agreement stipulates that the two countries jointly patrol the North Sea and North Atlantic.
According to the agreement, the German Poseidon will operate from the Lossiemouth military base in Scotland.
“It’s about knowing where they are and what they are doing. We can do that with the P-8 Poseidon,” Pistorius said last week.
The P-8A delivery is the first of eight aircraft based on US and German cooperation.The remaining aircraft will be delivered in 2028.
Poseidon will also replace the German P-3C Orion aircraft which is obsolete and will be retired.
P-8A Poseidon specifications
The P-8A Poseidon can fly more than 7,000 kilometers and carries five MK-54 light torpedoes weighing 300 kilograms each.If that’s not enough, this jet can also carry four AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles.
Poseidon uses sonar buoys that emit sound waves to locate submarines, with underwater microphones that record echoes to detect both conventional and nuclear submarines.This aircraft can also attack targets on land.
