Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Geological Agency, Priatin Hadi Wijaya, said that a number of volcanoes are even in the most active category because they often experience eruptions or increased volcanic activity. These conditions mean that monitoring must be carried out closely throughout 2025.

“A number of volcanoes are even in the most active category because they often experience eruptions or increased volcanic activity, so they require close monitoring throughout 2025,” said Hadi, Saturday (20/12) as quoted from

.
According to him, until mid-December 2025 there will be three volcanoes with Level III or Alert status, namely Mount Merapi in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java, Mount Semeru in East Java, and Mount Lewotobi Laki in East Nusa Tenggara.
Apart from that, 24 other volcanoes are at Level II or Alert status.
Hadi explained that the number of people living around volcanoes with alert and standby status is estimated to reach 15 million people. Therefore, community preparedness is an important factor in reducing disaster risk.
“Therefore, preparedness and compliance with recommendations are important to minimize disaster risk,” he said.
Currently, the Geological Agency operates 74 volcano observation posts and monitors in real time 69 active volcanoes throughout Indonesia. This monitoring is tightened towards the end of the year as community mobility increases and coincides with the peak of the rainy season.
“Monitoring will be tightened towards the end of the year as community mobility increases and coincides with the peak of the rainy season,” he said.
He added that a number of volcanoes with high levels of activity and a long history of eruptions include Mount Merapi, Semeru, Anak Krakatau, Kelud and Sinabung. These mountains are known to frequently experience eruptions with varying characteristics.
“These mountains are known to frequently experience eruptions with different characteristics, ranging from throwing ash, hot clouds falling, to lava flows,” said Hadi.
Mount Semeru, for example, was recorded as experiencing several eruptions in early December 2025. On Sunday (7/12/2025), the highest mountain on the island of Java experienced four eruptions with the height of the eruption column reaching around 1,000 meters above the peak.Until now, the status of Mount Semeru is still at Level III or Alert.
PVMBG also issued a number of safety recommendations, including a ban on activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan as far as 13 kilometers from the peak, as well as limiting activities within a five kilometer radius of the crater due to the potential danger of ejected incandescent material.
Apart from eruptions, the Geological Agency also warned of the potential for further dangers such as ashfall and lava flows, especially when the intensity of the rain increases. The peak of the rainy season is expected to last until the end of January 2026 and has the potential to increase the impact of volcanic activity in vulnerable areas.
As a country located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia has a high level of vulnerability to geological disasters. The government urges people living around active volcanoes to continue to monitor official information and comply with recommendations from relevant authorities to avoid the risk of disaster.
