“Recently, the Japanese leader has openly made provocative statements regarding Taiwan, damaging the climate of people-to-people relations between the two countries,” read a statement from the Chinese Embassy in Japan as quoted.
The Guardian.
Then on Tuesday (18/11), Chinese distributors postponed the release of two Japanese anime films Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot!The Spicy Kasube Dancers and Cells at Work!
Chinese news agency,
CCTV
, said the distributors took the step considering the performance of the Japanese film market and “audience sentiment” towards China, it was quoted as saying
Al Jazeera
.
Film distributor, according to reports
CCTV
, said Prime Minister Takaichi’s provocative statements would influence Chinese audiences’ perception of Japanese cinema.
Then, why is China boycotting Japan?
The boycott started with Takaichi’s statement regarding Taiwan and made China angry.
In early November before parliament, Takaichi said an armed attack on Taiwan could be the basis for Japan to deploy troops as part of the concept of collective defense.
“If the emergency in Taiwan involves warships and the use of military force, then it could be considered a situation that threatens (Japan’s) survival,” said Takaichi on Friday (8/11), quoted

.
China’s Foreign Ministry then urged Takaichi to withdraw his statement.
“The Japanese side should immediately correct its erroneous actions and retract its baseless statements,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press conference.
However, Takaichi refused to take back those remarks and emphasized that this attitude was in accordance with Japanese principles.
Takaichi is known as a supporter of Taiwan and a figure who is tough on China.
In addition, if a major Chinese attack on Taiwan occurs it could disrupt the supply chain. As much as 99 percent of Japan’s trade depends on maritime routes.
Other Chinese officials also expressed their annoyance at the Japanese PM’s comments.Chinese Consul General in Osaka Xue Jian was furious and posted a threatening statement to Takaichi on social media.
In the upload, Xue did not mention Takaichi’s name but included a news article in his comment,
“That filthy neck that barged in on its own, I had no choice but to decapitate without the slightest hesitation. Are you, ready?”Xue was quoted as saying
Newsweek
.However, the upload has now been deleted.
After the upload, it was Japan’s turn to criticize China.Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Xue’s remarks on social media were highly inappropriate.
“We strongly urge the Chinese side to continue to take appropriate steps so that this does not affect the overall direction of Japan-China relations,” said Motegi.
Netizens and the Japanese parliament are also busy demanding that Xue apologize. Some others even called for persona non grata for the Chinese diplomat.
Shortly after, Xue asked the public to stop speculating and distorting his words.
“I want to reiterate that the root of the problem lies with Japanese politicians who ignored our repeated and firm statements of rejection,” Xue said.
He then said, “They casually stated that the Taiwan contingency was a Japanese contingency.”Such a claim, continued Xue, would certainly be a threat to China.
Recently, China has appeared aggressive in intimidating Taiwan, a region it considers wanting to secede.
China has also repeatedly emphasized that it does not rule out the possibility of using force or coercive means to defend Taiwan.
