The Lebanese military also announced that it had arrested a perpetrator in connection with the case.
The Lebanese Army said they had arrested the alleged perpetrator, who they said killed Sukhni “after a financial dispute.”
This is the first confirmation since Assad’s overthrow in December last year of the presence of former Syrian government officials in Lebanon.
Many people in Syria believe that Assad-era figures are hiding in the neighboring country.
Sukhni, who sought asylum in Lebanon after the fall of the Assad regime, is a former Syrian intelligence officer with close ties to Suhail Al Hassan.
Nicknamed ‘Tiger,’ Hassan led Syrian special forces under Assad and was considered the former ruler’s favorite soldier.
He was also responsible for several important military advances by the Assad government in 2015 during the Syrian civil war.
The Assad family is known to have controlled Lebanese affairs for decades and is accused of killing many officials in Lebanon who opposed its rule.
Since Assad’s overthrow, Lebanon and Syria have committed to turning a new page in their relations.
However, some issues, such as Damascus’ demand that Beirut release Syrians held in Lebanese prisons, remain contentious.
