On the same occasion, Yoon also defended his decision to declare martial law last year as an effort to counter “pro-China, pro-North Korea and treasonous activities”.
He also criticized South Korea’s current President, Lee Jae Myung, for leading an “unjust and corrupt dictatorship”.
Yoon is currently behind bars following his decision to declare martial law in South Korea on December 3, 2024. He is being tried on charges of rebellion and a number of other violations related to the declaration.
Yoon faces the death penalty if proven guilty.
Wednesday marks one year after Yoon declared martial law.Even though 12 months have passed, South Korea is still politically polarized due to an economic slowdown, an aging population, and the never-ending threat from North Korea.
On Wednesday, thousands of people demonstrated in front of the National Assembly to urge Yoon to be punished fairly. However, there were also several hundred people who demonstrated in support of the former president.
Anti-Yoon demonstrators generally demand that Yoon be sentenced to death.
“To prevent an emergency like this from happening again, he must be sentenced to death and removed forever from society,” Kim, a protester, told

.
South Korea does have a law that allows the death penalty. However, since 1997, Seoul has imposed a moratorium. This means that Yoon will not be sentenced to death even if he is proven guilty.
Apart from Yoon, his wife Kim Keon Hee was also arrested on charges of bribery, stock market manipulation and gratification.
This is the first time in South Korean history that a former president and first lady have been arrested.
Dozens of Yoon’s cronies, including former intelligence chiefs and interior ministers, are also on trial on charges of rebellion. All trials related to the declaration of military emergency are scheduled to end no later than next February.
