“We had not imagined that the cyclone would be so stubborn (like the incident in November 2025), but the natural phenomenon is that flash floods often occur and coordination with the regional government already exists. However, perhaps its enormity was not imagined,” said Dwikorita in the Bulaksumur Corner at UGM, Sleman, DIY, Thursday (4/12).
The former BMKG boss revealed that the early warning had actually been followed up with an online meeting between himself and Bobby Nasution.According to Dwikorita, the North Sumatra Provincial Government was also ready at that time.
However, Dwikorita saw that the disaster this time was very devastating because it occurred in many river basins (DAS).He said the distribution was more widespread and faster than the 50-year cycle in the results of his research in Bahorok.
He also saw that there were non-natural aspects behind these changes. The Professor of Environmental Geology and Disaster Mitigation suspects that there is anthropogenic influence that has triggered changes in the land situation, although he did not specify what form of human intervention this took.
“So anthropogenic (factors) disrupt all readiness. In the future, learn from this, the only thing that must not be violated is ecology. Because no matter how prepared we are, if the ecology is not right, we will always be defeated by the existing challenges, our readiness will always be exceeded by existing events,” he explained.
Therefore, Dwikorita is warning about areas that have similar contours to the Bukit Barisan Mountains in Sumatra. This includes the islands of Java, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua which are claimed to have the potential to experience similar disasters.
He reminded that December 2025 to April 2026 is the period of cyclone growth south of the equator or southern hemisphere (BBS).Dwikorita said the rain from cyclone seeds was enough to trigger landslides and flash floods in geological areas, such as the Bukit Barisan case.
