The trial aims to determine the acts of violence committed against students that brought him down from power.
“All the elements that constitute a crime against humanity have been fulfilled,” judge Golam Mortuza Mozumder told a packed courtroom in Dhaka, as quoted

.
According to Mozumder’s statement, Hasina was found guilty of three charges, namely incitement, ordering to kill, and not preventing the violence.
“We imposed one sentence, namely the death penalty,” he added.
In addition, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who also fled, was also sentenced to death after being found guilty of four counts of human crimes.
Former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison.
The verdict was broadcast live on national television, ahead of the first election since he was ousted in August 2024.
Since the end of Hasina’s authoritarian rule, Bangladesh has experienced political turmoil.
Violence has marked the campaign period for elections which are expected to take place in February 2026.
The United Nations (UN) reported that as many as 1,400 people were killed in the crackdown as Hasina defended her position. This death rate became a major aspect of his trial.
Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, said he hoped citizens’ “thirst for justice” would be satisfied, and that this decision would be the end of human evil.
Prosecutors filed five charges, including not preventing murder, which is considered a crime against humanity under Bangladeshi law
The trial heard months of unindicted testimony, in which Hasina ordered mass killings. He called this process a “juridical joke”.
Hasina said the guilty verdict was predetermined, and she was not surprised when it happened, she said in a written interview with
AFP
in October.
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry summoned India’s representatives, asking New Delhi to prevent notorious fugitive Hasina from speaking to the media and giving her space to spread hatred.
Hasina said in October she “mourned all the lives lost during those terrible days” when students were shot in the streets.
His statement sparked anger among many people who believed he was trying hard to maintain power.
Hasina also said the banning of her previous party, the Awami League, by the interim government exacerbated the political crisis in the country of 170 million people ahead of elections.
