, North Sumatra after heavy rain caused the Besitang River to overflow.A number of residents were trapped in their houses when the water rose and were evacuated by the joint SAR team.
It was recorded that 9 sub-districts were affected by the flood, including Besitang, Pematang Jaya, Brandan Barat, Sei Lepan, Babalan, Tanjung Pura, Batang Serangan, Padang Tualang, and Gebang.Besitang and West Brandan areas are the worst hit areas.
Head of the Medan Class A Search and Rescue Office, Hery Marantika, said officers were deployed to evacuate a number of residents trapped by floodwaters in Pekan Besitang Village, Kampung Lama Hamlet, Besitang District, Langkat Regency.

“After receiving reports that there were residents who were trapped in the flood and needed evacuation, we immediately deployed two rescue teams totaling 14 people and equipment,” he said, Thursday (27/11).
Arriving at the location, the joint SAR team from Basarnas Medan, BPBD Langkat, TNI, Polri, village officials and local residents faced inundation conditions as high as 80-160 cm.Officers had to comb house after house to evacuate elderly residents, women and children using rubber boats and trucks belonging to Basarnas.
“Several elderly residents, women and children were evacuated safely using rubber boats and trucks belonging to Basarnas Medan to a safe location that had been prepared by the village government. The team also found an elderly person who had died and immediately handed him over to his family and the local government,” he explained.
Currently, officers in the field are still monitoring and collecting data on the number of affected victims.However, thousands of houses in Langkat Regency are confirmed to have been submerged due to the overflow of the Besitang River which occurred since Wednesday night.
“Monitoring continues to be carried out considering that rainfall in Langkat is still high and the potential for subsequent flooding cannot be ascertained. We urge the public to remain alert. If there is an increase in water discharge, immediately contact local authorities or the 115 emergency service,” he said.
