Floods, continued Murdhani, caused inundations long enough to disrupt plant growth and damage the soil structure of plantations.
In Birem Bayeun District, there are around 250 ha of smallholder oil palm rejuvenation land that has experienced moderate damage. Then, in Rantau Selamat District, damage reached 200 ha.
Damage to plantations in Ranto Peureulak and Banda Alam subdistricts reached 550 ha each. Then, damage to oil palm land in Peureulak District covered an area of 450 ha.
In East Peureulak District, damage was recorded at 150 ha, in Tunong around 375 ha, Julok up to 160 ha, and in Indra Makmu up to 750 ha.
Damage to people’s oil palm land also occurred in Pante Bidari District reaching 555 ha and Peunaron covering 890 ha.
Floods also have an impact on cocoa plantations such as in Pante Bidari District covering an area of 90 ha.
In Peunaron District, 50 ha of cocoa land was heavily damaged and in Indra Makmu District, 40 ha of cocoa land was moderately damaged.
“Damage to plantation land has the potential to reduce farmer productivity in the medium to long term. Apart from physical damage to plants, flooding also causes soil erosion, damage to garden channels, and loss of nutrients needed by plants,” he explained.
This damage also has an impact on farmers’ income. Therefore, the regional government will collect further data and coordinate with related agencies to develop recovery steps, including possible seed assistance, land improvements, and technical assistance for farmers.
“We are committed to encouraging accelerated recovery of the plantation sector so that community economic activities can return to normal after the disaster,” he concluded.
