“The existence of the sign is unusual, so we have handed over the findings to the police for further investigation,” Yeung added.
The apartment complex consists of eight skyscrapers with nearly 2,000 units. As many as seven of the eight apartment towers caught fire.
These buildings are currently undergoing a series of major renovations.Local residents said that many of the residents who live in this complex are also elderly.
Meanwhile, the city’s housing authority will check whether the protective coating used to cover the buildings during the renovation process has adequate fire resistance.
“We will seek accountability in accordance with applicable laws and regulations,” said Hong Kong leader John Lee.
Apart from polystyrene boards, the authorities also found a lot of bamboo scaffolding which was used to cover part of the side of the building which was being renovated.
Bamboo scaffolding is often used to cover buildings under construction in Hong Kong.
The authorities also suspect that the bamboo scaffolding was one of the causes of this worst fire.
The flames first appeared on bamboo scaffolding covering several apartment blocks.
