Qorin 2
trying to show the impact of the right path justice is not realized, making people take shortcuts even though it is wrong just to get something called “justice”.
Ginanti Rona and Lele Laila return as a duet in the sequel Qorin (2022) which has standalone status, aka a story that is not directly related to the prequel version.

This time, the center of the story has also changed. From previously being about a naughty girl who carried out a ritual of summoning spirits, it became a father’s struggle to uphold justice for his child who was the victim of bullying at school.
This bullying theme is actually interesting, especially the news about it
bullying
in educational institutions has become increasingly common in recent years.
Apart from that, this theme also extends Lele’s history of writing film stories that start from social problems. Moreover, Lele is still trying to make female characters the driving force of the story, including for Qorin 2 which actually centers on the figure of Makmur, played by Fedi Nuril.
However, you could say that Qorin 2 is not a horror film that focuses on mystical and supernatural things, but more on dark revenge. This is what makes this film perhaps not scary from the ‘ghost’ aspect, but rather from the aspect of depicting bullying itself.
Lele doesn’t seem half-hearted in imagining the bullying actions that high school students might carry out today, which I admit is quite interesting.
triggers
while watching.
Ginanti Rona as the director also welcomed Lele’s imagination.Ginanti confidently spews blood in a number of gore scenes, which apparently some viewers can’t see.
This method was probably chosen by Ginanti to thicken the elements of revenge and physical conflict that Lele brings into her script. But unfortunately I feel
gore
and revenge is much more pronounced than the supernatural horror, especially when compared to the content of this film’s message.
Not to mention that the storyline of this film is repetitive and does not experience significant development during its almost two hour running time. There isn’t much story exploration shown in this film, which might make me quite bored watching Qorin 2.
Repetitive plots are actually nothing new in horror films, even dramas. However, the same pattern without having the depth of the story, conflict, or maybe even the surprises of Qorin 2’s story, clearly makes 1 hour and 50 minutes feel like a long time has passed.
Another thing that might feel like a problem is the narrative and understanding of the qorin itself which feels like ”
missing part
” from Qorin 2. Moreover, the status of this film is
standalone
, it might make viewers who are new or don’t understand the concept of the genie qorin feel lost in it.
Meanwhile, I give my appreciation to Fedi Nuril who dared to get out of his comfort zone to take on a dark role in this horror film. He, who is often labeled as a romantic man with a warm side, is now playing as a man full of revenge.
Moreover, in this film, Makmur’s character has minimal dialogue so that the emotions and feelings required of Fedi must be expressed non-verbally.Unfortunately, this has not been executed perfectly by Fedi Nuril.
This is what makes Makmur’s revenge perhaps only visible on the screen, not reaching the outside and making the audience shudder.
Apart from the repetitive storyline and Fedi Nuril’s ‘plate’ persona, Qorin 2 displays good performance from the cinematography and visual teams, production design, make-up, sound design, and is a farewell to the late Epy Kusnandar who always appeared excellent.
