Watching
Nobody
made me fly back to my childhood memories, namely watching the series Kera Sakti aka Journey to the West (1999) starring Dicky Cheung. But this time, from a different perspective.
Nobody was created as a spin-off from the legendary story of the Tang Monk group. However, this 2D animated film from China follows the journey of four low-class demons: a pig demon, a frog demon, a ferret demon, and a gorilla demon.

pretending to be the legendary Tang Monk and his three disciples on a mission to the West, before the real Tang Monk and Sun Wu Kong arrive.
Starting from a ridiculous story in the form of a pig and a frog demon losing their jobs in the midst of a difficult job search situation, writers Yu Shui and Liu Jia developed Nobody into a story of various absurd adventures, ridiculous disputes, to a touching family story.
Yu Shui, who also serves as director, presents a story that feels absurd and real at the same time.
Shallow demons who have no privileges or ‘cool’ backgrounds like the characters in Journey to the West (1999) – in the sense of the word really nobody, aka “nobody” – are forced to work together to carry out this reckless and ridiculous mission.
The little demons are not perfect, often make mistakes, and even hurt each other, which makes their characters feel real.Everything is packaged in dialogue and scenes full of intriguing comedy.
In this journey filled with various emotions, each demon achieves personal growth, makes the story more complex, and finds the best in themselves.
Apart from the story, Nobody is a very interesting presentation because it involves 600 artists who combine traditional Chinese ink painting techniques, with modern lighting and space effects as 2D animation.
Not only that, Nobody also presents relevance ”
nobody in this real world
” through the story of the hard lives of urban workers facing conflicts related to stable employment. The themes feel strong when the film discusses personal achievements and character development, rather than just following the classic story literally.
As a result, this 118 minute animation successfully stunned me.Contemporary 2D visuals with beautiful yet “imperfect” textures feel like moving paintings which is the main attraction.Especially amidst the dominance of 3D animation and Japanese anime style.
The landscapes and buildings in the film Nobody also feel very amazing. Some of the scenes created by the artistic team led by Qian Kuan are so beautiful that the lighting feels very appropriate for an animation with a folklore background.
Mountains, forests, and temples are depicted in a brushstroke style that expresses the mystery and ancient age of the tale, a perfect fit for a story about humans mingling with talking animals.
Moreover, the sound design combines natural sounds such as waves, buzzing insects, birdsong and wind, as well as a combination of traditional Chinese instruments such as xun and bamboo flutes with a Western orchestra, providing a humorous accompaniment to the journey of these little demons.
The musical accompaniment in the film with the original title The Little Monster of Langlang Mountain also succeeds in strengthening the humor as well as emotional moments, making every laugh and sadness feel more alive.
In fact, I felt like looking for the pause button on the cinema screen projector to just be quiet for a moment with just my own head.
For me, Nobody is not just a fantasy comedy. This film reminds us that we always grow up in our own stories. When we look back and see how we as individuals have grown, when we see that the person we are today has succeeded in solving problems that our past selves were unable to face, when we realize that we have the power to help others even on a scale as small as an ant. It’s all pretty grand for yourself.
The story of these demons seems to provide a pat and warm embrace about courage, empathy, relationships and self-worth, which feels very relevant for all generations.
Nobody made me realize that each person’s life journey is unique, and the courage to face uncertainty, failure, and the injustice of the everyday world is a form of heroism in itself.
The absurd humor, ridiculous situations, and beautiful visuals displayed in Nobody provide space to laugh and reflect, a combination that I miss in modern animated films.
