The five victims who died were Bunhui (56), Tiong A Moi (70), Natilia (24), Gisel (7) and a baby sitter.
Died trapped in the house overnight
Penjaringan Police Chief Commissioner Agus Adi Wijaya said the five victims died because they were trapped in the house overnight when the fire broke out.
Witnesses initially reported the fire to the police. Then the police coordinated with fire officials and other parties for the extinguishing process.
Chronologically, Agus explained that initially the fire was seen burning from the front side of the house. Then, the direction of the fire was towards the back of the house.
Agus explained that initially officers and residents who were trying to extinguish the fire heard screams coming from inside the house. However, as time went by, information regarding the five people could no longer be known.
“Officers and residents in the field heard screams from inside the house asking for help. Next, officers and residents tried to enter by prying open the grille using a crowbar from the back door of the house, but the fire was already big and there was thick smoke, so finally the officers and residents withdrew for safety,” he said.
“Next, officers and residents tried to find information about the 5 people who lived in the house, but they were not seen around the crime scene and could not be contacted,” he continued.
Agus explained that the fire occurred overnight. It happened at around 20.10 WIB that night and the evacuation of the five victims was carried out at 08.30 WIB the next morning.
The reason for the long outage
North Jakarta Fire Operations Head Gatot Sulaiman explained the reason why the fire extinguishing process took so long.
Gatot explained that the fire occurred in an area of around 16.80 meters. He also revealed that the extinguishing process took a long time because many materials were flammable.
“The cooling process at the fire scene was hampered because there were B3 materials, oil thinner, paint, plastic pellets, paper, and also because access to the crime scene was narrow and partitioned,” he said.
Allegedly an electric car battery
Gatot suspects that the fire started due to an explosion from the car battery which was being charged, which then caught the thinner causing the fire to spread.
“The homeowner was charging his electric car when an electrical phenomenon occurred which caused an explosion in the car, then the fire explosion caught oil thinner and paint cans,” said North Jakarta Damkar Operations Head Gatot Sulaiman, as reported by detik Friday (19/12).
