But unfortunately, many people are still afraid that they don’t get enough sun exposure.
IPB University Faculty of Medicine lecturer Christy Efiyanti explained that people who are regularly exposed to active sunlight have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (PKV) and death from non-cancer and non-PKV causes.
According to him, a number of studies show that minimal exposure to sunlight can significantly increase the risk of death.
“Research in the last decade shows that lack of sun exposure may contribute to 340 thousand deaths per year in the United States and 480 thousand deaths in Europe,” he explained, reporting

Lack of sun exposure is also associated with an increased risk of various diseases, such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, hypertension, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, and autism.
Christy explained that sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D, which is an important nutrient for maintaining immunity, bone health and metabolic function.
“Sufficient exposure to sunlight can increase a person’s vitamin D levels. On the other hand, vitamin D deficiency often occurs in people who rarely do outdoor activities,” he said.
When is the best time to sunbathe?
The ideal duration of sun exposure is influenced by time of day, season, latitude, weather conditions, and skin color.
“Melanin, the skin’s natural pigment, functions as a protector that influences how much ultraviolet B (UVB) light can be absorbed. Generally, people with fair skin need sun exposure for 5-15 minutes, 2-3 times per week,” he said.
A UK study suggests 9-13 minutes of sun exposure at lunchtime between March and September.
Meanwhile, research by Prof.Siti Setiati in Indonesia shows that exposure to UVB light for 25 minutes, three times a week for six weeks, can increase vitamin D levels significantly.
Christy appealed to the public not to hesitate and be afraid when doing outdoor activities.
“Increase daily outdoor activities and get into the habit of sunbathing every day. Don’t forget to check your vitamin D levels,” he advised.
