Ethiopia Confirms First ‘Outbreak’ of Marburg Virus

The first case was reported in Ethiopia’s southern region, Omo, which borders South Sudan.

On Thursday (11/13), Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya said the outbreak was worrying.
“South Sudan is not far away and has a fragile health system,” Kaseya said as quoted by
Al Jazeera
.
Apart from Ethiopia, no other country in Africa has reported cases of the Marburg virus in recent weeks.
Marburg virus originates from Egyptian fruit bats.The virus can be transmitted between humans through infected body fluids or objects contaminated with fluids such as clothing or bed sheets.
The CDC describes the Marburg virus as a “rare but severe” hemorrhagic fever that can be deadly.
Marburg virus infection can cause symptoms of fever, rash and heavy bleeding.According to the CDC, there is no treatment or vaccine for Marburg.Treatment, according to the CDC, is limited to supportive care including rest and hydration.
On the other hand, World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday praised the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and other health agencies for their “rapid and transparent response to this outbreak”.
“This swift action shows the seriousness of the country’s commitment to immediately controlling this outbreak,” Tedros wrote in a social media post.
He continued that WHO is actively supporting Ethiopia to control the outbreak and treat infected people, and supports all efforts to address potential cross-border spread.
Meanwhile, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health said community-wide screening was underway.Then the infected have been isolated and treated.
The ministry also appealed to the public not to panic, always follow instructions from health authorities, and seek medical attention if symptoms appear.
