The East Java Provincial Government is intensively carrying out weather modification operations (OMC) as a measure to mitigate hydrometeorological disasters ahead of the peak of the rainy season. To date, 30 flights or sorties have been carried out to anticipate extreme rain in vulnerable areas.
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said the OMC was carried out in line with the increasing risk of disaster when rainfall reached its peak. This operation itself was carried out through the East Java BPBD in collaboration with Juanda Airport, BMKG, and PT Milan Pillery as weather modification operators.
“BMKG said that the peak rainfall in December was 20 percent. Meanwhile, the peak was in January which reached 58 percent and in February 22 percent,” said Khofifah in his statement, Monday (22/12).

This weather modification operation was carried out to help make the distribution of rain more regular and even, especially in the southern region of East Java such as Pacitan to Banyuwangi, in accordance with BMKG forecast results.
OMC is carried out using environmentally friendly materials which are sown via special planes. This material functions to help enlarge the water droplets in the clouds so that rain can fall in a more controlled manner.
Until December 20 2025, the total number of OMC flights was recorded at 30 sorties. In this operation, 14,000 kilograms or 14 tons of calcium oxide (CaO) and 16,000 kilograms equivalent to 16 tons of sodium chloride (NaCl) or salt were used, with a total flight time of 62 hours 24 minutes.
Apart from relying on weather modification, Khofifah also reminded the importance of the community’s role in independent disaster mitigation, especially amidst the increasing intensity of rain.
“Let’s exercise as much vigilance together as possible to avoid dangerous things,” said the former Indonesian Minister of Social Affairs.
He also appealed to the public to protect the environment by not throwing rubbish into rivers, cleaning waterways, and avoiding taking shelter under large trees when it rains and strong winds.
“I think we can access things like this from various platforms so that our lives are safe and secure,” he said.
