Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Anom (KGPAA) Hamangkunegoro Sudibyo Rajaputra Narendra Mataram or Gusti Purbaya was inaugurated as King of the Surakarta Palace or Pakubowono XIV on Saturday (15/11).

The ceremony was a follow-up to Gusti Purbaya, who had the status of crown prince, confirming himself as his father’s successor in front of the body of Pakubuwono XIII on Wednesday (5/11).
“I serve as Sri Susuhunan at the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace with the title Sampeyan Dalem Ingkang Susuhunan Kanjeng Susuhunan Senopati ing Ngalaga Abdurrahman Sayidin Panatagama kang Jumeneng Kaping 14,” said Purbaya, starting his statement, Saturday (15/11).
SISKS Pakubuwono XIV made three promises.He vowed to carry out leadership based on Islamic law and customary paugeran (law) at the Surakarta Palace to the best of his ability in a fair manner.
“Secondly, I will support the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia physically and mentally and serve the country,” he continued.
He also vowed to preserve Javanese culture inherited from the Islamic Mataram dynasty, especially the kings of the Surakarta Palace.
However, Purbaya’s brother from a different mother, namely KGPH Mangkubumi, also claims to be the heir to the royal throne according to traditional rules.The eldest son of Pakubuwono XIII also claims to be SISKS Pakubuwono XIV.
This claim is based on the fact that several of the younger siblings of the late Pakubuwono XIII felt they had never been consulted about succession.They finally held a meeting at Sasana Handrawina, Thursday (13/11).
The meeting, chaired by KG Panembahan Agung Tedjowulan, also invited the children of Pakubuwono XIII.However, of his six children, only Mangkubumi and his sister, Gusti Putri Purmaningrum, were present.
During the meeting, Mangkubumi was crowned Prince Pati, aka future king, with the title KGP Adipati Anom Amangkunagoro Sudibyo Rajaputra Narendra Mataram.Fifteen minutes later, he was inaugurated as King of the Surakarta Palace with the title SISKS Pakubuwono XIV.

This condition further emphasizes the dualism in the Surakarta palace that occurred in 2004, namely when KGPH Hangabehi and KGPH Tejowulan claimed to be Pakubuwono XIII.
The late KGPH Hangabehi was the son of Pakubuwono XII, while KGPH Tejowulan was the younger brother of Pakubuwono XII.Two parties claimed the throne because Pakubuwono XII did not have a queen consort even though he had a son.
