Deputy Chairman of Commission IX of the DPR, Charles Honoris, proposed that the budget for the free nutritious meal program (
MBG
) can be temporarily diverted to handle the Sumatran floods during the two-week school holiday period until early January 2026.
Charles questioned the effectiveness of the MBG program if it was forced to continue during the student holiday period. Moreover, he received information that students only received processed foods that were low in nutrition.
“Instead of imposing programs at a time when they are less relevant, wouldn’t it be wiser if the budget was diverted to respond to other urgent needs?”Charles said when contacted, Monday (22/12).

“For example, helping disaster victims in Sumatra or strengthening health facilities and nutritional restoration in areas affected by acute stunting,” he added.
The PDIP politician assessed that the distribution of MBG in the form of dry or packaged food during the school holidays had actually deviated from the program’s initial aim of improving children’s nutrition.
He believes parents have the ability to provide the best nutrition for their children.Charles admitted that he didn’t want MBG to seem too pushy just to spend the budget.
“We need to be honest, don’t let this program be forced just to spend the budget at the end of the year. Public activities like this must be oriented towards real benefits, not spending absorption,” he said.
Charles hopes that the government will review the implementation of MBG during school holidays.According to him, as a strategic program, MBG must meet its initial objectives.
“I hope the government can really review the implementation of MBG during the holiday period, to ensure this program continues to run according to its objectives,” he said.
BGN previously confirmed that the MBG program would continue even though school was closed.Head of BGN Dadan Hindayana has prepared a number of alternative distribution of MBG menus for students during the Christmas holidays.
According to him, the distribution of MBG to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and children under five will run as it should.Meanwhile, for school students, the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) or MBG kitchen will carry out an inventory of the number of children who are willing to take MBG food to school.
“For pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and toddlers as usual. For school children, each SPPG needs to carry out an inventory of how many and how often children are willing to go to school,” Dadan was quoted as saying.
