Chairman of the Democratic Party, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) called the decision an important step to unite history and respect all the great contributions in the nation’s journey.
“A great nation is a nation that respects the services of its predecessors. Gus Dur and Pak Harto, with all their strengths and weaknesses, have made extraordinary contributions to Indonesia during their lifetime,” said AHY in a written statement, Sunday (9/11).

According to AHY, the state’s recognition of the services of previous presidents is a sign of the nation’s maturity in seeing history as a whole and fairly, without getting caught up in past political differences.
“Every era has its own challenges and context. Our task today is to continue their struggle, strengthen unity, uphold justice, and ensure that people live in prosperity,” said AHY.
He gave an example when he served as President of the Republic of Indonesia, SBY also gave the title of national hero to the 1st President Soekarno.
“Of course there are pros and cons, but at that time Mr. SBY saw it comprehensively through the existing mechanisms. As an ordinary human being, Bung Karno certainly had his shortcomings too, but his contribution to the country cannot be forgotten. That is what made Mr. SBY confident in giving Bung Karno the title of National Hero,” said AHY.
The names of Suharto and Gus Dur are included in the proposal to receive the title of national hero this year.The existence of Suharto’s name raises pros and cons.
Recently, it is said that President Prabowo Subianto will announce the names of 10 national heroes at the State Palace to coincide with Heroes’ Day, Monday (10/11) tomorrow.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that one of the 10 names of new heroes was the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto.
“Tomorrow, God willing, it will be announced. Approximately 10 names. [Soeharto] Yes, come in, come in,” said Prasetyo in Kertanegara, Jakarta, Sunday (9/11).
