Danantara is now trying to organize and limit the number of layers of state-owned subsidiaries in order to increase accountability and efficiency.
“There are seven layers. After working at Danantara, I only understood what the layers were called. Previously, I only understood it from the (company’s) grandchildren,” said Managing Director of Danantara Operational Holding, Agus Dwi Handaya at the UGM Innovation and Creativity Center (GIK), Sleman, DIY, Tuesday (11/11).

Agus said that currently there are a total of 1,045 BUMN, of which 50 have 338 subsidiaries.From these 338 subsidiaries, 585 grandchildren emerged, as well as 193 great-grandchildren.Then, there are 36 companies, 3 canggah, 2 wareng and at the udhek-udhek level there are 2 companies.
“Of course, with so much layering, it results in inefficient and uncompetitive operational management. There is overlap and competition among BUMNs, even between BUMNs within one parent,” said Agus.
Danantara also sees many cases of mismanagement of this situation.For example, factory investments worth tens of trillions that are not carried out carefully and carefully, result in inefficiencies in the production process.
“Weak project management results in cost overruns or project delays. The business portfolio is diverse outside of the core so it is unable to compete competitively,” he said.
Then, subsidy pricing structure creates incentives but results in inefficiency, especially in state-owned fertilizer sectors.
“Mismatch financing. There are lots of long-term investment projects, but the financing comes from the short term. The restructuring process is carried out partially, not completely,” said Agus.
Therefore, the government through Danantara now feels the need to restructure, aka downsizing the number of BUMN which reached thousands, to only around two hundred.
This effort is included in one of the pillars of BUMN transformation, namely business transformation.Plus steps to consolidate, redefine, and also build operational excellence.
“From the one thousand (BUMN) earlier, to the seven layers, it will be streamlined to perhaps around 200 BUMN,” he concluded.
