“What was the dark history of 1985 to 1995 (the freezing of Customs), we don’t want that to happen or be repeated by Customs and Excise. So of course Customs and Excise must improve themselves to eliminate the negative image,” he explained when met after the destruction of illegal BKC at the Jakarta Customs and Excise Regional Office, Wednesday (3/12).

Djaka said he would start improving DJBC’s work culture.He also encouraged improving the work of his subordinates, which was achieved through supervision at ports or airports.
Djaka also promised to improve all services for the community.He understands that there is still dissatisfaction from the public, but Djaka is confident that Customs and Excise can improve it little by little.
He gave the example of using artificial intelligence (AI) at a number of entry points in Indonesia to avoid the practice of underinvoicing.Even though it is not perfect, Djaka claims it is part of an improvement effort.
“We will resolve those who are still stubborn, that’s all. This is because we have a process, there are processes, more or less. I don’t know how many (bad employees) we have taken action against, but it has gone through a process, whether from internal compliance or from the Inspectorate General of the Ministry of Finance,” he said.
“Perhaps the image in society that Customs and Excise is a nest for extortion is gradually disappearing. We are asking for support from the public to support how we can be better in the future,” he stressed.
Previously, Purbaya emphasized that he had asked President Prabowo Subianto for permission to improve the Directorate General of Customs and Excise over the next year.
Purbaya claims that the image of Customs and Excise is not good from a number of angles, both in the media, in society, and even among Indonesia’s highest leadership, aka President Prabowo.
“Let me, give me time to improve Customs and Excise. Because the threat is serious, if Customs and Excise cannot improve its performance and the public is still dissatisfied, Customs and Excise can be closed,” said Purbaya after a Working Meeting (Raker) with Commission XI DPR RI in Central Jakarta, Thursday (27/11).
“If we fail to fix it, 16 thousand Customs and Excise employees will be laid off. Customs and Excise people are smart and ready to change the situation,” he added.
The customs freeze occurred in 1985, aka during the era of the 2nd President Soeharto.At that time, Suharto laid off all of the agency’s employees for 4 years.
Soeharto froze Customs and Excise in order to fight insane corruption in the agency.At that time, the replacement for customs and excise duties was a Swiss company called Suisse Generale Surveillance or SGS3.
