(Elephas maximus sumatranus) through collaboration with the Vantara conservation center from India, including encouraging the revitalization of elephant hospitals in Indonesia.
Director of Species and Genetic Conservation at the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) of the Ministry of Forestry, Ahmad Munawir, said that his party is committed to strengthening the protection of Sumatran elephants which are in a critical population condition.
One of them is by visiting the Elephant Hospital in Way Kambas National Park with Faunaland Indonesia and international partner Vantara from India.

“Vantara will help Indonesia to build or revitalize the previous Gajah Hospital in Way Kambas, and perhaps in the future we can also build other hospitals on the island of Sumatra, perhaps in Riau, and perhaps in Aceh,” said Ahmad, quoted from

Ahmad said this step was part of the direction of President Prabowo Subianto and Minister of Forestry (Menhut) Raja Juli Antoni to improve the ecosystem as the main habitat for Sumatran elephants.
“Our visit here (Way Kambas) with the team from Faunaland Indonesia and also Vantara, this is a form of commitment from the Ministry of Forestry, especially our minister, Mr Raja Juli, that we must improve the ecosystem as a habitat for the Sumatran Elephant,” he said.
Based on IUCN red list data, the Sumatran elephant population is in the critical category, threatened with extinction, due to decreasing numbers and habitat destruction.
Currently, Ahmad explained that the elephant habitat pockets which previously had more than 44 locations had shrunk to around 21 fragmented pockets.
The Ministry of Forestry encourages collaboration between parties to save elephant populations and habitats, including building connectivity between habitats through ecological corridors.
Meanwhile, Faunaland Indonesia CEO Danny Gunalen appreciates the Ministry of Forestry’s trust and his party is committed to supporting the conservation and preservation of Indonesia’s biodiversity, especially the Sumatran Elephant, through a partnership with Vantara.
Vantara is a giant wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and conservation center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India, with one of the most advanced Elephant Hospitals in the world.
Danny explained that the initial survey results showed the urgent need for the Way Kambas Elephant Hospital, including the provision of a special ambulance for elephants.
“In the short term, perhaps an animal ambulance will be needed, because there are none here to transport elephants. The animal ambulance is very sophisticated, this car has a forklift and so on, and the necessary requirements,” he said.
Apart from short-term needs, Faunaland and Vantara are also preparing long-term plans in the form of revitalization or building a new hospital for elephants.
“We will revitalize the elephant hospital or even build a new one,” said Danny.
