“In Ranu Kumbolo, the conditions are safe, but there is an appeal to come down,” said Edy to journalists, Thursday (20/11).
Ranu Kumbolo is a crater lake at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level or about six hours from the peak of Mount Semeru via the Kalimati climbing route which is usually visited by climbers.
Basarnas confirmed that there were at least 60 climbers accompanied by 15 guides who were stuck at Ranu Kumolo because until the afternoon the weather was foggy with light rain.
Even so, Edy confirmed that Basarnas personnel had been alerted and they were continuing to communicate with volunteers, guides and Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park officers to accompany the evacuation of the climbers out of the Mount Semeru area.
Edy said that the implementation of the evacuation task was also carried out together with a joint team from BNPB, BPBD, TNI/Polri which had been deployed shortly after the eruption of Mount Semeru this afternoon.
“Conditions are safe,” he said.
The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) previously reported that Mount Semeru erupted at 16.00 WIB with the height of the eruption column observed to be around 2,000 meters above the peak.
During the eruption, Mount Semeru exhaled hot clouds that had a sliding distance of up to seven kilometers from the peak with columns of gray ash observed with thick intensity towards the north and northwest.
The eruption recorded on the seismogram of the volcano monitoring post in Lumajang had a maximum amplitude of 40 mm and a duration of around 16 minutes 40 seconds.
The eruption activity of Mount Semeru which was monitored this afternoon was confirmed to end at 18.11 WIB, but is still at Level IV or Alert status.
