“This important package will not only fund the acquisition of significant new weapons from the United States, but also greatly enhance Taiwan’s asymmetric capabilities,” he wrote in an article in the Washington Post, released on Tuesday (25/22), quoted

“By doing this, we aim to strengthen deterrence by adding greater costs and uncertainty to Beijing’s decision-making regarding the use of force,” he added.
For 2026, the government proposes defense spending to reach T$949.5 billion.
Taiwan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is now at 3.32 percent, exceeding 3 percent for the first time since 2009. This number exceeded the 3 percent threshold for the first time since 2009.
Previously, Lao had hoped that defense spending would reach 5 percent of gross domestic product by 2030.
But since Donald Trump took office as US president, he has approved only one new arms sale to Taiwan, a $330 million package for fighter jets and other aircraft parts announced earlier this month.
Plans to increase Japan’s military defense budget at a time when Tokyu is at odds with Beijing.
“We are grateful that President Donald Trump has affirmed the importance of American leadership around the world. The international community is now safer thanks to the Trump administration’s efforts to achieve peace through strength,” Lai wrote.
Previously, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said an armed attack on Taiwan could be the basis for Japan to deploy troops as part of the concept of collective defense.
China then urged Takaichi to withdraw his statement.However, the PM was reluctant to withdraw this statement.Relations between the two countries are increasingly heating up.
