, Chinese Ambassador to the UN Fu Cong in a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Friday (21/11), called Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi a serious violation of international law and diplomatic norms when he said a Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo.
“If Japan dares to attempt armed intervention in the cross-Strait situation, it would be an act of aggression,” Fu wrote, according to a statement from China’s UN mission.
“China will resolutely exercise its right to self-defense based on the UN Charter and international law and firmly defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.
Biggest bilateral crisis
Beijing views democratically ruled Taiwan as its territory. They therefore did not rule out the opportunity to use force to control the island.
Even so, the Taiwanese government rejects Beijing’s claims and says only the island’s people can determine their future.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry and Prime Minister’s Office could not be reached Saturday for comment on Fu’s letter, seen as the harshest criticism of Takaichi so far from a senior Chinese official in the biggest bilateral crisis in years.
Takaichi, a conservative nationalist who took office last month, ignored the ambiguity that Japan and the US have long used regarding Taiwan when he told a parliamentary questioner on November 7 that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan – which lies more than 100 km (60 miles) from Japanese territory – could be considered “a situation that threatens Japan’s survival”.
It is a legal term that allows the Prime Minister of Japan to deploy his country’s military.
Takaichi’s remarks sparked a bitter standoff with China that has spilled beyond diplomatic boundaries in recent days.
Meanwhile, China said that Jelang’s attitude had damaged trade cooperation, and on the other hand, a Japanese musician’s concert in China had been suddenly cancelled.
Fu demanded that Japan stop carrying out provocations and crossing the line, as well as withdrawing its erroneous statement because it was deemed to be openly challenging the interests of the Bamboo Curtain Country.
As the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II approaches this year, Beijing has increasingly highlighted Tokyo’s wartime atrocities and China’s postwar role in establishing the UN, while criticizing its Asian neighbors and seeking to overhaul the international governance system.
China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has repeatedly emphasized two postwar declarations envisioning that Taiwan and other territories once occupied by Japan would be returned to Chinese control.
The Potsdam and Cairo Declarations form the basis of China’s legal claim to Taiwan’s sovereignty, although many governments view them as statements of intent, not legally binding agreements.
Furthermore, the declaration was signed by the government of the Republic of China, which fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing the civil war with Mao Zedong’s communists.Taiwan held China’s seat at the UN until 1971, when the seat was transferred to the government of Beijing, the People’s Republic of China.
